Why the price drops in internal projects
- Simpler UI requirements. The app should be clear and fast, but it doesn’t need to convince anyone to stay. No onboarding designed to sell, no campaign banners, no A/B-tested conversion flow – the design work focuses on efficiency, which costs less than a custom visual language with animations.
- MDM distribution without store review. The app is distributed through your MDM tool instead of the public App Store. No review queue, no public releases, no rejections that push back the timeline – releases go out when you decide.
- A known device fleet. Consumer apps need to work on thousands of device models and OS versions. An internal app is tested against the fleet IT actually manages – sometimes a single phone model – which shrinks the test and support matrix considerably.
A fourth factor is the forgiving rollout: an internal app can launch to a pilot group, get adjusted based on real use, and then expand – without public ratings punishing early growing pains.
In short: the same feature costs less to build, test, and maintain when the audience is known and controlled.
SSO and AD integration: the most common integration
Almost every internal app starts with the same requirement: employees should log in with their regular company accounts. The connection is made to Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD) or Google Workspace via standard protocols like OIDC or SAML.
As a standard integration, this is a small item – days rather than weeks – and it pays for itself immediately: no separate password management, automatic deactivation when someone leaves, and permissions that follow the organization. The price tag grows in three cases: when the directory is an older on-prem installation without modern interfaces, when the permission model is complex and needs to be mirrored in the app’s roles, or when several companies in a group need to join the same app with different directories. Describe your IT environment honestly at the quote stage, and the item gets priced correctly from the start.
A worked example
A service company with 80 technicians replaces paper reporting with an app: work orders, checklists, photos, and signatures, connected to the business system and with SSO. An app like that typically lands around SEK 600,000–700,000.
Now work backward: if the app saves each technician 15 minutes a day in administration, that translates – with 220 working days and an hourly cost of SEK 500 – to roughly SEK 27,500 per technician per year, or over SEK 2 million for the whole team. Even if reality lands at a fraction of the theoretical saving, the numbers hold up with a wide margin. That’s why internal apps are often the most profitable app investments a company can make, even though they never appear in any store.
