App development in Stockholm
Stockholm is Sweden's largest market for app development – and one of the most expensive, with hourly rates often at the top of the SEK 900–1,400 range. Many Stockholm companies therefore choose agencies in other cities that work remotely with regular in-person meetings. Set up right, that delivers the same result at a lower hourly cost.
Stockholm is Sweden’s largest app market: it has the most clients, the most agencies, and the highest hourly rates. For many Stockholm companies, the interesting question therefore isn’t “which agency in Södermalm?” but “does the agency need to sit in Stockholm at all?” At Weapp, we’re a Gothenburg-based team that builds apps for companies in Stockholm – here’s how it works in practice.
Sweden’s largest app market – and the most expensive
Stockholm’s agency market mirrors the city’s cost level: high salaries, expensive office space, and stiff competition for senior developers push hourly rates toward the top of the Swedish SEK 900–1,400 range. There’s nothing wrong with the expertise – but for the same budget, you often get more senior hours from an agency in, say, Gothenburg, where the cost level is 5–15 percent lower. On a project of 800–1,000 hours, that’s a difference big enough to fund a whole extra feature stage.
At the same time, Stockholm’s supply is the broadest in the country, from solo consultants to international consulting firms. That makes the comparison harder rather than easier: quotes differ more in content than in price, and the hourly rate alone says little about total cost. In that situation, where the agency sits is a less important variable than what’s actually included.
Remote collaboration in practice
Remote isn’t “checking in now and then” – it’s a working method with a fixed rhythm. Here’s how we typically set up a collaboration with a Stockholm company:
- An in-person kickoff workshop at your office. One or two days where goals, audience, requirements picture, and priorities get set together.
- Two-week sprints with a video demo at the end of each sprint – you see a working app, not status reports.
- Daily contact in your or our Slack or Teams channel, the same presence as an internal team.
- In-person check-ins roughly monthly or at major decision points, held in Stockholm or Gothenburg depending on what suits.
- A shared backlog and full visibility into time reports, test environments, and code from day one.
The high-speed train between the cities takes just over three hours, so “on site tomorrow” is fully realistic when something calls for it. Most clients quickly notice that the rhythm – not the zip code – decides the quality of the collaboration.
The technology: React Native, iOS, and Android
We build apps in React Native when one codebase needs to reach both iOS and Android at a reasonable cost – the right choice for most products – and natively in Swift or Kotlin when the platform needs to be pushed to its limits. Behind the apps, we build backend, integrations, and cloud architecture, so the entire chain from interface to server side holds together with one provider. For you in Stockholm, that means a partner who can take end-to-end responsibility regardless of where the team physically sits. The way of working is exactly the same as with our Gothenburg clients – the same tools, the same demos, the same visibility. The difference is that the coffee meetings get scheduled instead of happening spontaneously.
Sejfa – a reference for consumer apps
For companies building consumer products, Sejfa is a good reference for what we mean by quality: a digital home insurance product for young adults where the whole flow – from first impression to a signed policy – is designed to feel effortless on mobile. That kind of product sets the same bar as Stockholm’s consumer market at large: a high design standard, fast flows, and a technical foundation that can handle growth.
A worked example: a Stockholm project with a Gothenburg team
Say a Stockholm company orders a medium-complexity customer app of around 800 hours. At a Stockholm agency with an hourly rate of SEK 1,250: one million kronor. The same scope with a Gothenburg team at SEK 1,100 per hour: SEK 880,000, plus a handful of trips for workshops and monthly meetings – say SEK 20,000–30,000. The net difference of around SEK 100,000 funds two months of maintenance after launch. The numbers are an example, but the mechanics hold: in hour-intensive projects, the hourly rate matters most, and travel time is cheaper than the price difference.

Frequently asked questions
How often do you meet in person on a remote project?
A common setup is in-person meetings at project kickoff, at major milestones, and then roughly once a month. Between those, all work happens digitally with daily contact. The kickoff workshop is the most important one to do in person – that's where the requirements picture and the relationship get set.
Are there extra costs for travel?
Travel for planned meetings is often included in the setup or billed at cost – that should be stated in the quote. In a normal project, that's a handful of trips between Gothenburg and Stockholm, a marginal line item against the project as a whole, and often less than the hourly rate difference between the cities.
What does app development cost for a Stockholm company?
The price ranges are national: a simple app SEK 250,000–600,000, a medium-complexity one SEK 600,000–1,500,000. With an agency outside Stockholm, though, the hourly rate is often 5–15 percent lower, which on a larger project amounts to tens of thousands of kronor with no difference in delivery.
Who owns the code when an external agency builds our app?
You as the client should own the code, the developer accounts, and all environments – that's set out in the contract. Check that before the project starts, whatever agency you choose. Serious providers have this as standard and also hand over documentation that makes you independent.
Can we combine our internal Stockholm team with an external agency?
Yes, that's a common and often effective setup: the agency builds the app while your internal team owns the backend or integrations, or vice versa. It requires clear interfaces and shared planning, but gives you both pace and knowledge transfer.
